You always knew there was something different about your child. They seem to see the world in a really different and special way, but sometimes in a way that doesn’t quite fit this world. You were so worried when the doctors wanted to do another evaluation and when you got an ASD or ADHD diagnosis you didn’t know what that would mean. You still aren’t sure what it will mean. Even if you haven’t gotten a diagnosis: you worry about your child’s differences and what that might mean for them. Does the diagnostic path help or harm them? You’ve entered this world where everyone has an opinion about what is best for your child. Some of those opinions are really heated and the consequences seem really scary for your child’s future.

Even the language that is used in this world is debated “is your child special needs, a child with different needs, neurodivergent, an autistic child, or a child with autism?”. The debate around the language speaks to all sides of your feelings about your child, you want what is best for your child but at the same time, there is no clear answer about what that is.

Everyone has an opinion and while your child is young and possibly as they get older, you have to navigate this with and maybe for them. How do you help your child to be as successful as possible in a world that wasn’t meant for them without forcing them into a box that they aren’t meant to fit in? And if you push them too hard to fit in that box, there seem like there could be really big consequences. Then you add that you don’t understand their differences and sometimes feel really lost looking at your child and don’t know what to do. Other times you start to see similarities between the things that make them neurodiverse and yourself and you wonder what that might mean about you.

As your therapist for parenting your neurodivergent child, I will help you to navigate all of this. I will help you to understand your child and what is going on with them. I will help you prioritize what feels right for your child and what doesn’t. Together we will work together to figure out what is a reasonable expectation for yourself and your family and what is not. I will help you find your voice as a parent and help you figure out which path fits your child today. Which path looks like the most likely to help your child thrive now? And how could this change down the line? Together, we will help you figure out when your priorities have changed.

By the time we are done working together, I hope that you will feel confident in who you are as a parent. The external voices and opinions of others will be quieter as you are able to choose the current best path for your child and know that if that path needs to change you will know what to do. You will understand your child’s needs and what you can do to help and how to provide that.
